IE A MALARIA?

It looks like there might be a laugh after all in the tech industry. Why is it so? According to Mozilla's VIP of engineering, Internet Explorer is like malaria. "A lot of people have had malaria and a lot have got it, but it doesn't mean that they have to choose it", Mike Shaver said.

Did you catch that Microsoft? Mozilla's just totally dissed you and name you after a pathetic disease. What now?

We suspect that the answer is nothing, and that's a shame. What we’d like to see is Microsoft like any other tech firm to start comparing their features to the rival’s one and prove them wrong.

The more wacky, politically incorrect and complete immature the better. "You claimed IE is like malaria, is it?" "Well, Firefox is like a big fat boy on a girl's bike! And also, your mum is fat!"
Wouldn’t that be just sweet?

The tech industry do prides itself on its innovation, so let's see some innovation in PR. This will provide a great deal of opportunity for the tech industry. Firms could now express their brand values in their put-downs.

We know the industry can do it but all too often the fun stuff is reserved for upholding the companies' own products.

Bungie Jason Jones who described Halo 2 as "a lot like Halo, only it's Halo on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas. And the ninjas are all on fire too." Imagine that sort of mental firepower used not to fight for the good but for pure sinister plan. What a beautiful world we could have.

The Walkaround: Rakan Muda E-gig 2009

Heyya folks, welcome back to The Walkaround. Sorry for a very late post. This time, yours truly made his way to Kompleks Rakan Muda Puchong for the whole weekend for Rakan Muda E-gig 2009.

Here's an extract of what E-gig means from Rakan Muda E-gig 2009

Rakan Muda E-gig consist a multi-event which includes the first ever Cyber Games Tournament to be held by Rakan Muda. Just in case anybody wonder what E-GIG means, GIG stands for 'gatherings in group' as many of us have in mind that the term GIG normally used for rock concerts for underground music or indie bands, well literally it's something like that except for the letter E carries the 'Electronic' word. In short, E-GIG means Electronic Gatherings in Group.

The event is actually a continuity of the latest Lifestyle branding by Rakan Muda which is called 'Rakan Muda Remaja Siber', launched by our Ex First Lady, Tun Jeanne Abdullah on June 2008.

The event was launched by Puan Wasitah binti Haji Mohd Yusof, Deputy Director General, Rakan Muda Development Division. According to Puan Wasitah while having a light session, this is the first time Rakan Muda is organizing such an event and they are willing to give full support to youths are trying to improve the scene for the benefit of other youths.

During the event, there are Shuffle Competition, Breakdance competition, Live band performance and the main attraction, the Grand Finale of Defense of the Ancients (DotA), FIFA 09, Winning Eleven 2009 and Tekken 5.

We cut short the overview, so here's the full result of DotA, FIFA 09 and Winning Eleven 2009, courtesy of khairil_kaka, dharwin & [MyFeS.INC] aRr0y0s™

Overall, it was a brave attempt by Rakan Muda to organize such an event, given the limited experience and knowledge of the organizers about the rules and regulations of how the tournament is conducted.

However....

The organizers should review again the participation since there are a lot of walkovers, causing the organizers a big headache to scramble the whole format which causes a lot of confusion to other gamers. Furthermore, the tournament area was too close to the live band performance (Remember Youth'09?) which is quite distracting to the gamers.

As usual, the PROS, CONS and RATING from Spotgamers

PROS - A brave attempt by Rakan Muda and a good choice of diversing the types of games such as DotA, FIFA 09, Winning Eleven 2009. A massive turnup during the first day of the event, signalling that there's some hope for gaming scene in Malaysia

CONS - A lot of delays, participants went missing suddenly, walkovers occured, the format and rules was not standardized. Some DotA teams also complained that they have to wait for a day until their matches started.

RATING - 6/10. A inaugural event that has the potential to be improved in the future. Who knows Rakan Muda can organize a big-scale gaming event just like WCG Malaysia and Indie Youth Fest?

OK, cut the crap please, here are the piktors!

This is a very huge turnout for an e-sports tournament!

WCG.MY Announces Official Games List!

The good news: WCG.MY is back. The bad news: There are only 3 game titles. That’s right; the favourite titles like Counter Strike and Need for Speed are missing, though we already knew beforehand that Need for Speed was not in the official games list as it was replaced by the mighty Trackmania.

The Spotgamers team refused to be drawn into commenting about the negatives of the omissions, instead we would be focusing on the positives and what to expect in the coming event. The games chosen are still highly popular, and we expect a huge turnout for all games. After all, it is the WCG. It is the most prestigious gaming tournament around. To be crowned the WCG champion is the dream of any gamer. And judging by the turnout for the Rakan Muda E-GIG event, we can expect bigger crowds for this gaming festival.

The dates and number of slots available for each game are yet to be announced, so stay tuned to Spotgamers for the latest updates and information.

THIS IS MENTAL!

Doctors can clearly pinpoint why certain teens get into immense amounts of trouble and the explanation isn't always their lifestyle or the television, but another problem that relates to both in a way.

Computer games can cause mental issues in teens as they grow up and the problem is growing at an alarming rate, not only do we see teens committing crimes that involve hurting others but also putting themselves through such regrettable act. Also, we do see a growing trend of population of juvee patients and that's not a good sign at all. The main question again is why such games cause abusiveness and problems amongst other teens that play them?

Well the answer is pretty logical; teens get so into the flow of the game that they lose interest in their surroundings whilst concentrating on the violent tactics and strategies to be executed in the games they are playing. If doctors can prove that video games are a vast problem, then ESRB rating would have to go up and more "proofing" would have to be done in retail stores

While the majority of mental issues that occur in young teens are abusiveness, there is also a growing issue that has to do with struggling in school and not being social with other kids your age. While there are many other things that can cause these problems including television and bumming around inside for no apparent reason, however we see video games topping the list. Not only do teens do not go out and enjoy life, but they also eat a lot more which can make them obese, consequently leading to larger problems down the road when they grow older. So why are video games so so addicting?

Well the fact is that these particular teens just have no self esteem and self confidence. All they do is just playing games and that’s the way of their life because they feel that if they are good at video games, then they are good at something. This is something positive in its own way, but it just isn't healthy to sit around for hours on the couch staring at the screen. I recommend more mamak sessions, get out from the house, and have supper, talk about games and more games and nothing else but games, no one cares really. At least you are away from the god damn screen for once.

Parents often complain all the time about their children losing interest in other things, especially their friends and they blame it all on video games, so at least this is a start to figuring out the overall problem at least. Game developers can't stop the production of violent video games because there are adults that have high interests in such games. The only thing retail stores really need to do is proof everyone that looks underage and maybe increase the ESRB rating of M related games to 18 + perhaps.

WE ALL BEGINS AS NEWBIES

Fiesta Online

It wasn't that long ago that myself with a couple of my friends was a Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) newbie and addict. I had tremendous help in my first introduction to true multiplayer gaming from a knowledgeable significant other. I have to admit that it is very easy to be intimidated by the thought of an MMO, from the large scale worlds most of these games are centred on to the varieties and kinds of people you will meet during your days of gaming

Firstly, you have to choose an MMORPG based game you wish to play. This is probably the most convenient step and most of us individuals get into MMOs because of a desire to play with a group of friends, a commercial they see or recommendations on various websites. In the event that you're stuck at this step, do consider the following:

Consider what major game titles available. Currently, the largest MMOs are
World of Warcraft, Everquest, Everquest 2, City of Heroes, City of Villians, Star Wars Galaxies, Final Fantasy XI, Guild Wars and Dark Age of Camelot. There are also several other preferences out there but these are a few that are well known and have a broader player bases.

Also, do read up reviews for various MMOs. Gamespy is a good place to start.
Browse through screenshots from various games see if the game appeals to you. Screenshots are often available at the main homepage for a particular MMO game.

Most MMOs, you have to pay to play and is usually on a monthly basis. This price does vary and the only current mainstream exception being Guild Wars, which is free to play. So you might want to opt to take advantage of some other free-to-play MMOs.

MPOGL maintains a list of free-to-play MMOs do check it out. Do take note that, most free MMOs so not have the graphical quality of the pay-to-play compared to the mainstream ones, with the exception of Guild Wars. If you want to try out the game play style unique to MMOs or don't want to pay a fee every month, free-to-play games are your best bet.
