Gaming Edu: Sponsorship

by Rinie. Monday 16/6/08

For some reason, sponsorship seems to be an alien here in Malaysia. It is pretty hard for gamers, even top gamers to actually seek sponsorship as well. Not just games facing this alien prob, but even our own local celebrities; singers and actors are finding it hard to get sponsorship for concerts, movies, etc. Is this a big issue here in Malaysia?

To understand this more, why not we be in the shoe of the sponsors for awhile. What do sponsors want? There might be a lot of reason but the main purpose is to increase the sales or the branding of their company.

Now if gamers actually just focus in winning tourney, does this improve the sales for the sponsors? If they wear a logo of the sponsors, does this help their branding publicity?

No money. Sad T_T

Just by winning tourney, gamers would not made much different, UNLESS the tourney manage to get many mainstream media coverage. Even the most popular gamer in the world Fat4lity would not be so famous if his winnings were never been expose by the media. Nobody will know his amazing achievements. But sadly, there are not much exposure done by the media, even the prestige WCG didnt get big coverage locally and internationally as well.

So gamers in Malaysia must understand their role and be creative in finding ways on how to work together with sponsors. Gamers, sponsors, medias and all party must play its role to ensure that the gaming community will always be strong, better and productive.
