DO VIOLENT GAMES ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BE VIOLENT?

Pundits on either on of the sides often quote scientific studies that prove or disprove any correlation between violent video games and increased in violent behaviour. As with many kinds of behaviour studies, the real story is not at all clear. There are three types of lies: lies, damned lies, and you have the statistics.

The study of media effects covers everything from movies to video games, TV shows and music. Yeap, you heard me right, even music. Over the years, conflicting studies have been published showing different correspondence between viewing violent media and the increased aggressiveness, especially in children. The reason TV talking heads often say there is a "link" between video games and increased aggressiveness; this is often because even the most negative studies generally go only so far as declaring a "correlation" between media violence and real-world behaviour, not a "contributing relationship." The difference may seem small, but in scientific terms, it's a gap as big as the Grand Canyon.

That being said, a true causal relationship is nearly impossible to prove, and it is taken as a reliable conclusion that exposure to violent media, including video games, is one possible risk factor for kids who become violent in real-life. But, this must generally be coupled with real world influences and a previous disposition for anti-social behaviour. In short, excessive exposure to violent games can trigger problems in children who are already at risk, but much as you can't hypnotize someone into committing a crime, gaming by itself won't turn a normal kid into a killer.

Whats your take?

IMO, stuff about video game violence is not relevant at all. Yeah, maybe their so-called scientifically-proven research say it all, but they should do something about those b-rate movie first. Dun blame everything on games. Sigh, when will our beloved Jack Thompson stop attacking us....

but movies are more on viewing/watching instead games are more interactive manners.

so in terms of influence mayb games is slightly higher than movies.

wht do you think? ^^

IMO, everyone is violent when the times he get violent. So, if the person play games, maybe he will become the like person in the game.... so do when someone watch movies/ CSI.....

eg,
A watch WWF, when he get in fight.. he will chokeslam/watever* his enemy.

B play GTA, when he get in fight.. maybe he takes knife/stick to fought against his enemy.

Rinie play FIFA, when he get in fight.. sure he will slide his enemy.... XD

just my opinion... =D

Rinie play FIFA, when he get in fight he dive and pretend to be injured XD

lol u got a point there that people tend to do things that they see. but most importantly they do it bcoz they really want to do it,not bcoz the game told them to do so.

how about tht? ^^

That's true. So it comes down to the family itself to protect their kids.

Although i really doubt that violent games have anything to do with a kid grabbing a gun and killing people in real life. If a kid is raised in a proper way with real values and there's is nothing inherently (genome-wise) wrong with it, there's no way in hell that it will go buzzerk just by playing a violent game. Now, if there is something wrong with the kid from the beggining, then there's a lot of other environmental factors that may act to push into expressing violence.

Hi. it is certain violent games lead to violent act. though, like what was commented in the article, individual with anti-social behavior+violent games can lead to violent act. However, for certain young individual who play games 24hrs a day, which leads to anti-social behavior can lead to a detrimental social behavior. But this not necessarily be an act of violence. This is the same for movies and any other types of media. Though with different menifestation

All in all, young kids playing violent games without supervision, is worrying. ESRB. young adult with no common sense playing violent games is worrying.

Only god knows.
