PETALING JAYA: Five local cyber-athletes have done the country proud by being the first Malaysian team to participate in DreamHack Winter, billed as the world’s largest digital festival.

DreamHack Winter takes place in Jonkoping, Sweden from Nov 26 to Nov 29, and will be streamed live via the gaming portal www.hltv.org.

The Malaysian players, Team LZ, will compete in the Counter Strike 1.6 (C) Valve category with over 32 teams from 18 countries around the world. The only other Asian team in this category is from Singapore.

Team LZ stands to walk away with 200,000 Swedish kronors (approximately RM100,000) if they are successful.

The DreamHack festival is a computer, gaming and multimedia extravaganza held twice a year in Sweden and has 10 electronic sports tournaments.

A total of 11,000 participants are expected to flock to the DreamHack festival to play the latest computer games, attend seminars, watch films, perform music and others.

“We are honoured to bring the first Malaysian team to the DreamHack festival, which is a Guinness Book of Records event that recorded over 10,554 computers and 11,060 attendees in 2007,” said Go International Group Sdn Bhd managing director Jasmine Low.

The Go International Group is the organiser of the annual Independent Youth Festival / Digital Delirium Xpo, which is a national digital festival and e-Sports tournament held from August to October in Penang, Sarawak and Selangor.

As a reward, winning teams at this local event are selected to represent the country at festivals such as DreamHack.

Team LZ beat 11 other local teams to win the all-expenses paid trip to compete in DreamHack Winter.

Team LZ has a wide experience in cyber-gaming, which includes participating in the Asian Cyber Games 2007, World Cyber Games 2008, Electronic Sports World Cup Pre-Qualifier Subang (Malaysia) and the 2nd Electronic Sports World Cup (Malaysia) events.

They are also the champions of Sudden Attack, a game played at the first Asiasoft Game Festival 2009 (Malaysia) and second Boazman Championship 2009 (Singapore).
